Class Schedule

Mark Kaufmann

Class: Function First K9

Master Trainer & Handler for the 2nd Ranger Battalion (17+ years), with 10 combat deployments. Since 2013, he has trained hundreds of police canine teams nationwide. As the owner of Function First K9, he provides specialized training for law enforcement and military programs, including canine sales, decoy schools, detection problem-solving, and tactical integration.

Chris Cottrell

Class: Proven & Effective Criminal Interdiction Practices & Deployment Considerations on Vehicles

Idaho State Police K9 Unit Supervisor with 20 years in interdiction and 11 years as a K9 handler. A certified K9 Detection Instructor and Evaluator for Idaho POST and an adjunct instructor for Utah POST. Leads the K9 division of Idaho’s "Esto Perpetua" Interdiction Team. Has personally investigated over 800 cases and assisted in hundreds more.

Ken Pavlick

Class: All Things Detection

Co-owner and head trainer of Pacific Coast K9, Ken Pavlick began his K9 career in the U.S. Air Force in 1982, handling and training patrol, narcotics, and explosives detection dogs. He later served with Riverside County Sheriff’s Department and Canyon County Sheriff’s Department, where he built a 15-team K9 unit and trained over 40 narcotics detection teams.

A certified Master Trainer, Ken is an instructor for SKIDDS/KATTS SWAT/K9 interdiction courses and multiple state and national organizations. Since founding Pacific Coast K9 in 2003, he has placed over 2,000 working dogs and continues to teach and contribute to Police K9 Magazine.

Billy Sawyer

Class: Preparing for the Real Engagement

Billy Sawyer has 16 years of Law Enforcement experience that started with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office in Jacksonville Florida. Billy was assigned to a Tactical Narcotics Unit that focused on undercover operations along with the service of search warrants, arrest warrants, and vehicle assaults. He was also a firearms instructor for the department.

In 2013, Billy became an officer with the Longmont Police Department and joined the SWAT team in 2014. He deployed as the primary attached K9 asset to the SWAT team. He was also a patrol Sergeant and K9 Supervisor/Unit Trainer. Billy resigned his position with Longmont PD in 2024 and trained high performance canine teams for the USASOC Multi-Purpose Canine Program.
